Did you know that 305 million people around the world live outside their home countries? The reasons for their migration vary but are frequently the result of political conflict, economic hardship, ethnic persecution, and climate stress among other factors. Refugees face significant barriers to successful resettlement including trauma, language and cultural differences, as well as access to employment and education. Pangea supports grant partners in Thailand and Uganda, two countries with significant refugee populations.
On November 9, 2025, Pangea members gathered to learn more about migration, and to hear from Jules Mayele about the work of our grant partner Solidarity Eden Foundation (SEF). Jules, who is the executive director and co-founder of SEF, visited Seattle after lecturing and meeting with students at Stanford University. SEF is a refugee youth-led organization based in Kampala, Uganda.

Founded in 2015 SEF addresses pressing challenges such as forced displacement, ethnic conflict, unemployment, and social disconnection. Through trauma-informed, and community-driven programming they focus on equipping refugees with the tools they need to integrate into local communities, build sustainable livelihoods, and rediscover a strong sense of identity, belonging, and hope.
During their latest programming year, SEF worked directly with 439 refugees. Participants came from 10 different countries of origin, and spoke over 41 languages and dialects.
Their primary program areas are:
English Language Development
Social and Cross-Cultural Exchange
Vocational Training
Business and Entrepreneur Development
